“Big Apple”可不是“大苹果”，不知道就糗大了！
我们在做英语翻译的时候，经常会因为不了解相关的文化背景知识选择“直译”而出现很大的笑话。只知字面意思，不了解真正含义。
Big Apple是个典型的美国俚语
它表示“纽约”。
I live in the Big Apple.我住在纽约。
作为美国最重要的经济中心，为什么人们用大苹果来形容纽约呢？
起源
这有几个主要的传说：
1、1920～1930年，爵士乐大行其道，有个爵士乐手大唱：成功树上苹果何其多，但如果你挑中纽约市，你就挑到了最大的苹果！(There are many apples on the success tree, but when you pick New York City, you pick the Big Apple.)所以把纽约称为大苹果。
2、传言经济大衰退时，许多银行家失业潦倒，必须从其市郊住家载着一袋袋苹果到到纽约大街上卖。包括一些名门望族都被迫以此维持生计。因为纽约州常见到苹果树，对纽约经济扮演相当重要角色，进而市政府大力推行这个名词代表纽约。
有关“apple”的俚语
Apple of one’s eye = to be one’s favorite
掌上明珠；心肝宝贝（指某人极为珍爱的人或物）
She’s the apple of her father’s eye.
她是她父亲的掌上明珠。
Compare apples and oranges = to compare two things that simply cannot be compared
比较两个无法相比的事物
That’s ridiculous. Now you’re comparing apples and oranges.
真可笑，你这是拿两种无法相比的东西作比较，就好像苹果和桔子。
"How do you like them apples?"
你认为那怎么样？（和"what do you think of that?" 一样）
